When you say silicone gasket, do you mean a bead of RTV placed around the pan lip?

Re: 78 cj7 oil pan gasket

I would definately NOT use RTV for the pan gasket. I have used both the old style (four piece) and the new style (one piece molded) and have had good luck with both. I spray some contact adhesive (aerosol type) on the surface and gasket to get it to stick, then put in place. I do put a little RTV at the corners of the rear main cap and block as well as at the timing cover and block intersections. This is just to make certain to completely seal off the corner joints, don't use too much as you don't want it oozing inside the engine.

Torque the bolts properly, overtorqueing is probably one of the most common problems I encounter when people have leaks afterwards. I think the small bolts are around 6-9 ft/lbs and the larger ones are 12-14 ft/lbs. but I could be wrong, you will want to check the FSM.

If I can be of further assistance please don't hesitate to ask.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum. Great group of people here.

I have used both the one-piece and the older four-piece design pan gaskets with good results. On engines where the one-piece is available I have been using them as I do like them a little better. Just remember like I mentioned above to put a little RTV in the corners and torque the fasteners correctly. Follow those directions and you should be fine.
